Hi everyone!
Last year my friend Steve and I took part in Bummit; an amazing charity hitch-hike from Sheffield to Croatia. The catch was that we could spend no more than £15 on transport for the whole trip, so we wouldn't even make it to Birmingham unless we stuck out our thumbs and hitched like a couple of old school hippies.
I won't tell you the whole story now but suffice it to say that we had some brilliant adventures along the way and met a whole range of people from the hilariously crazy to the wonderfully generous. We reached Croatia after one week, tired and dirty (we'd slept in a Lidl car park the previous night) but invigorated. We had just traveled 1500 miles by 19 cars, a ferry, 3 buses, a lorry, a few trains and only spent £2 on transport!
Soooo... I'm finally getting to the point. This Easter, Steve and I are joining forces again (as Team Hungary Hungary Hippos) with Budapest, Hungary as our final destination.
So far I have talked about the fun aspect of Bummit, but there is also a serious reason for doing it. Last year I raised £200 for the charities that bummit supports and I hope to do the same again if not better.
The Charities
Catch 22
– this provides a service to 15 to 25 year olds involved in criminal
activities, these people have the potential to offend, and they are
offered counselling and education. This charity works with their
families and communities so that young people become more productive,
independent and therefore the whole community benefits. Over the years,
they have worked with tens of thousands of people for young people in
difficult situations.
Fable – this
charity promotes awareness of epilepsy through education and publicity
with money used towards Vagus Nerve Stimulation Therapy which is a
treatment for those with epilepsy which cannot be controlled with
medicine alone. They support the Epilepsy Information Drop in Centre in
Sheffield and help the family of those affected by this condition.
Both charities are based in the Sheffield area with the money given locally meaning Bummit is helping to improve the local area.
Thanks so much if you read all that and I will be so grateful for any help you can give
Alex ;)
