Story
3 days. 72 hours. I will consume nothing but unflavoured tap-water. Promise.
Apparently by mid-afternoon of day 1 you feel your first hunger pangs: the stomach starts to grumble. Later that night the hunger can only be classed as pain. Sleep would be a blessing if the pain would subside.
Day two is miserable, headaches and shakes are certain, nausea and vomiting are to be expected. By day 3 you are weak, exhausted and defeated.
I am putting myself through this ordeal in order to raise funds for Glasgow Straight Talk, a charity through which I am hoping to volunteer in Uganda this summer. Please please please give generously, it is a great cause and your kind donations will motivate me through the lowest points.
Glasgow Straight Talk is a charity set up by students of Glasgow University which sends groups of students to aid a Ugandan charity called Straight Talk, which provides teenagers and young people with a better understanding of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV prevention and empowerment.
This summer, four students including myself are hoping to go to Kampala and work with Straight Talk for 5 weeks. Our main task will be to travel to surrounding areas and hold workshops in local schools and youth groups. These workshops will cover the kind of social education that we all receive in primary and secondary school, but that the Ugandan government does not provide as part of it's curriculum. HIV/AIDS is a massive problem in Africa, but especially so in Uganda where it affects as many as 10% of the population. The only way to lower this number is to target young people and educate them to prevent infection. Another aim we have is to dispel some of the stigma surrounding HIV. Many Africans still regard HIV as a disease of sinners, and the social consequences for someone infected with HIV can be far worse than the disease itself.
I can guarantee that all money raised by GST fundraisers will be spent on the charity itself, on equipment, facilities, cars and drivers for us to get from A to B whilst over there. We fund our flights, accommodation, meals and leisure activities with our own money.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my page.
