1 in 5 children in the UK are affected by their parents' alcohol problems. They are often frightened and isolated, with no one to turn to for help. Nacoa responds by providing a free, confidential telephone, 1-2-1 chat and email helpline.

Story

Yorkshire 3 Peaks, Helvellyn & Striding Edge, 24 HR Excersize Challenge - For 3 Charities

NACOA - National Association Of Children Of Alcoholics - Nacoa (The National Association for Children of Alcoholics) is a Bristol based charity founded in 1990 to provide help and support for everyone affected by a parent’s drinking. We believe that every child has the right to a happy childhood and to live a creative and meaningful life but when drink is the family secret they are more likely to experience family violence, neglect and other problems in their own homes.

Scarborough Survivor's - Local Mental Health Service Provision - Scarborough Survivors is committed to reducing stigma and isolation by encouraging people to talk about their mental health and providing access to some funded counselling services.

Arc House Rehabilitation Centre, Scarborough - Ark House works in partnership with 4 detox facilities around the UK and also a home detox specialist who provides home medical detoxification. Whilst our NHS service is currently offering at home detox programmes, the complexities to undertaking any kind of detox we feel requires more intense intervention and have chosen this charity to support their mission.

Myself and my family are fundraising for 3 Charities on a number of dates this year in order to raise funds for 3 charities close to our hearts in memory of mum, Julie Allison aged 49 on her 5th year death anniversary.

The first event will involve myself and my brother Rikki and we will be completing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge which should take around 7 hours to complete. We will later be camping in a local area and heading back the day after. We will both find this a challenge walking and jogging as much as we can tracked by a FitBit.

The second event will be facilitated by my sister Danielle Allison and uncle Steve Robinson and will be a 24 hour excersize challenge. This will involve various excersize challenges such as weight lifting, running, walking and on the bike machine in one of mums favourite places, Sunset 24hour Gym. This will be a consistent 24 hour excersize with different family members, neices and nephews, taking part in different activities throughout the day.

The third event will take place on mums 5th death anniversary, where me and my brother Rikki will be heading over to The Lake District to complete Helvellyn and striding edge which should take around 7 hours to complete.

We would like to use 2 significant dates for us this year in order to fundraise for charities that we feel would benefit from support.

We recognise and have lived experience that addiction does not only effect the person addicted, but also their children and families around them in some way, often resulting in bereavement.

Whilst we understand the stigma of addiction often due to this being an individual life choice, children and families often do not have a choice and this is our reason for choosing to support NACOA.

We also recognise that many people struggle with mental health prior to addiction and would like to support Scarborough Survivor's in offering prevention support.

Many people suffering with addiction are trapped in a vicious cycle, back and forth to the doctors, hospitalizations and if lucky home detoxes but very little support is available in order to break this cycle. Both within funded mental health provision and substance abuse services.

There are very few places available in rehabilitation centres and often come with a high cost attached. We feel private rehabilitation centres with 1-2-1 support and therapeutic access are the way forward in seeking beneficial life changing support.

We would be greatly appreciative of any support to provide extra help within this gap of lack of funding for mental health and substance provision.

Any support small or large would be greatly appreciated 💖
