Brighton Marathon 2018 · 15 April 2018 ·
If youve taken the time to click on this link then thankyou, but i ask for another few minutes of your time to read my story.
When i was 14 years old i lost my dad to a brain tumour. His death was very sudden, and caught everybody off guard. He was a normal guy, worked hard for his family and enjoyed his time off. We were very close and i idolised every step he took, every decision he made. He was my hero.
We will never know exactly when he developed his tumour, but the signs began to show when he was sent home from work with crippling headaches which resigned him motionless on the sofa. They continued with his memory. Forgetting things he did five minutes ago, losing track of journeys and items. The most prominent was when he was trying to take me to football, the same place he took me every week, but could not remember the way. The headaches and poor memory was followed by violent vommiting. These symptoms combined made the family worry and encourage him to see a Doctor.
He went to the hospital, with his mum and dad and best friend and i followed. I didnt leave his side that night until the doctor told me i had to. Little did we know he would never come home. From that day to his death was only around 2 weeks. He spent his last few days in Marie Curie Hospice under the care of the nurses after a failed biopsy renderred him effectively paralyzed. He died on 28th November 2007.
Brain tumours recieve the least amount of funding from Cancer Research UK, but are the biggest killing cancer of people under 40. Just let that sink in. Too little is known and that needs to change.
I previously completed the Brighton Marathon in 2013, and raised over £1700 for this wonderful charity. I've decided to do it again this year to help fund research to find a cure, but also as a personal challenge. On 1st April 2017, i snapped my Anterior Cruciate Ligament. On 25th july 2017, i had reconstruction surgery and am now having intensive physio to recover. This marathon is only 8 months after my surgery, and is a very tough task as i can only begin to run on 25th November 2017, and even then only in a straight line. It will be tough, and very demanding, so please dig deep and give what you can to this incredible charity.
I know we all have a charity we love and support which means a lot to us, but this is one very very close to mine and my families heart. They do great work and every penny really does help.
If you got this far down, thank you.
Jack
