Dementia NI was set up by 5 people living with dementia. They knew that raising awareness and challenging the stigma of dementia was vital in empowering them, and others, to live well with their diagnosis. Dementia NI drive's positive change , your support makes that possible. Thank you.

Story

Two years ago at the age of 62 our daddy was diagnosed with early onset dementia. Getting that diagnosis so young was heartbreaking for daddy and for us. His plans of a lovely retirement having not had a day off work sick in all his years were taken away.

Dads confidence hit the floor - he didn’t speak in fear he would say something wrong, and didn’t like to leave the house. It was at this low point that we heard about Dementia NI. Hearing that the board of this charity and its members suffered too, some younger than daddy - but that they lived normal lives, they were out and about, taking part in sports and going to events,  give our family hope. When we met the other members they had a similar story to tell to dad and he started going along to their social events - he was a new man. No longer did he feel down about his diagnosis - he looked forward to getting out, he laughed and felt incredibly cared for. We are indebted to Dementia NI for giving daddy a new lease of life and so my brother and I are running the Dublin half marathon to raise vital funds helping them to continue their amazing work and to raise awareness of the charity so that others suffering can reach out and get help too. Any donation no matter how small would be greatly appreciated. Dad was part of a panel about his diagnosis in front of a packed room of people who came along to a Dementia NI event earlier this year!  We are so proud of what he has achieved with their help, support and encouragement.

Thank you so much
