We raise funds for young people with cancer to provide a 'smile' and create memories

Story

Thanks for visiting my little fundraising page!

As many of you will know already, from time to time I dream up mad challenges for myself to complete, although always in aid of a fantastic cause.

In this case, throughout the course of 2017, my self-set challenge (dreamed up by my wife - thanks Becky), is to 'virtually' run from John o' Groats to Lands End, a traversal of the whole length of the island of Great Britain between the southwest and northeast extremities.

Although I won't physically be able to run the actual geographical route itself, the challenge (normally known as just 'JOGLE') will involve running a total of 812.82 miles and ascending 18,965 feet over the course of the calendar year. In total, this means I will need to complete an average of 15.63 miles and 364.31 feet each and every week. Now this may not sound too bad to a more experienced runner, but for someone who DEFINITELY isn't a keen runner the reality seems daunting to say the least.

The Alexandra Sales Trust is a wonderful cause, set up to create a legacy in memory of Alexandra Sales, and in order to support children and young people aged 1 to 24 who have been diagnosed with Cancer. The aim of the Trust is to raise ‘Smile Money’, in order to give something to young people being treated for cancer and going through what Alexandra endured.

I have been fortunate enough to be involved with the trust since its inception through my friendship with Alexandra's sister Georgina and the rest of her wonderful family. You can find out more about the trust on their website: http://www.thealexandrasalestrust.co.uk

The route that I am using as a reference for distance is the overall shortest route possible on foot, and can be viewed at the following link: http://gb.mapometer.com/running/route_4111590.html#

I will also be using the Strava app in order to track and monitor my progress, which can be viewed here: https://www.strava.com/athletes/1177138

About the charity

The Trust has been set up to create a legacy in the memory Alexandra, who, on the 2nd April 2013 was diagnosed with Mastitis Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare, rapidly spreading soft tissue cancer. She passed away on the 16th September 2014 aged just 17. The ethos of our Trust is to support children and young people aged 1 to 24 who have been diagnosed with Cancer. The support given to Alexandra during her illness by the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey was without fault. We the Trust and her many friends are committed to raising as much money as possible to help other children in similar circumstances. Alexandra was able to benefit from a number of small charities. A personal shopper day at Top Shop. She was so excited when she came home explaining her day. She was able to have a real hair wig to feel 'normal' for her school prom and was so proud of the MAC laptop she was given. Alexandra requested it because she had every intention, when she recovered, of studying photography as an A level. These donations made her happy and gave her something positive to focus on, a distraction which helped her cope mentally with the enduring treatment. This is the aim of our Trust, to raise ‘Smile Money’. We want to give something to young people being treated for cancer . Maybe it will be another Mac Laptop or a weekend away for the family. We want to gift a memory.
