In March 2018 my Father, Fionn Somers Eve was diagnosed with lung cancer. The following 6 months saw operations and therapy, hospital trips and both my mother and my father become the two strongest people I could imagine. Unfortunately it soon spread into his spine, pelvis and then kidneys, rendering him unable to walk in his final months.
In October I got the call telling me to get back to England as soon as I could. Father was bedridden, with a fractured pelvis, 7 stone (45kg) lighter than he was in March, and was dying. Yet he remained the man so many people knew and loved - jolly, positive and humorous even in the face of death. We had two weeks together of long talks and some laughter along with the sad times, before he passed away at home on 11th October.
Macmillan (Midhurst) were there for our family to help come to terms with what the diagnosis meant, to set up our home to become easy and comfortable for him to keep living in, for any questions any of us had, day in day out at home with us over the final weeks at his bedside, and then after to provide us with immense support.
I want to do this challenge to provide Macmillian with the funding to give another family the same support, as I know we couldn’t have got through it without them.
On October 26th I will hike, run, crawl and however else I can move the entire 70km (43miles) of the Lantau Trail in Hong Kong, a hike which will include climbing up c.3,800 feet Lantau Peak and Sunset Peak. I will be doing this carrying up to 7 stone (45kg), the weight that Father lost from the illness, with a minimum weight of 30kg on my back.
Thanks for taking the time to read this far and for anything you can do to support.
