Janice's Warwick In Africa in South Africa

Warwick In Africa (South Africa) · 3 July 2019
Dear Reader,
Firstly, thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. My name is Janice, I am an Undergraduate student studying Philosophy and English Literature at the University of Warwick. This Summer I will be teaching children English Literature and Language for 8 weeks in Alexandra, Johannesburg.
What is Warwick in Africa?
Warwick in Africa is a philanthropically funded volunteering programme supporting Maths & English education in South Africa, Tanzania & Ghana. The programme enables school children to escape poverty through the transformation of their education.
One of the key motivations behind the Warwick in Africa programme is a strong belief in Maths & English skills as being 'powerful liberators' from poverty.
Warwick in Africa delivers sustainable improvements in education through coaching, mentoring and training both teachers across Africa and selected volunteers who take part in the programme.
Why am I Volunteering?
My educational experience has taught me that although one's immediate social circumstance in which they find themselves is not always favourable, improvement and transformation of it can be achieved through the action of one person. This philosophy of mine was derived from my secondary school experience whereby there was a lack of both teachers and resources. It was the words and actions of two teachers in conjunction with my faith and family that transformed my mindset and work ethic; Both of which are the reason why I am where I am today.
To me, the job of teaching entails much more than equipping a child with knowledge of a particular subject. Teaching can also equip a child with a particular thinking style. In volunteering I hope to encourage children to think beyond their immediate social circumstances.
Thus, my vision for partaking in the Warwick in Africa programme is to equip children with a mindset; A mindset which establishes that there is no correlation between one's social setting and capability or potential. In addition to a drive to transcend their social setting both in regard to thought and action.
How can you help?
It costs just £10 to teach one child for a month through Warwick in Africa. Please give what you can, every little counts and every donation is appreciated.
God Bless you x
-Love Janice
