My good friend's daughter was born with major medical challenges. She needed urgent medical intervention right from the off to save her life. Her first operation was successfully carried out in Puerto Rico, the USA. However, with a high risk of suffering major disability the medical experts advised against any further major surgery. The only problem with that was Tanesha's life remained at risk until the required surgery on her major organs could take place. With a seemingly no-win situation, Tanesha's father was recommended to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. The staff at GOSH immediately took on the challenge of conducting a sequence of life-saving operations over the following 16 years of Tanesha’s life. I am pleased to report that each of the operations has been successful – so much so that Tanesha is now expected to lead a near normal life. So me doing this cycling challenge goes a small way to recognising the courage and significant personal challenges faced by Tanesha and crucially the unbelievably varied number of challenges overcome by the staff at GOSH on a daily basis.
