Hayley Alman is raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity
In memory of Jay Alman
The Brain Tumour Charity is the world’s leading brain tumour charity and the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally. Committed to saving and improving lives, we’re moving further and faster to help every single person affected by a brain tumour. A cure really can’t wait

Story

Jay died from GBM (glioblastoma multiforme) on 1st May 2012, since then we have held an annual concert to celebrate his life and to raise money for research.

We give money to the Brain Tumour Charity because they support research into all types of brain tumours .

Jay was first diagnosed just before his 16th birthday, after he had a massive tumour removed from his head under emergency surgery, three days later the doctors took us into the ‘quiet room’ and told us the facts.  Jay had Glioblastoma multiforme and there was no cure. He had a 10% chance of survival and most people had between 6 to 18 months to live.  Jay was the strongest person I have known in my life and carried on fighting for three years.  Brain tumours are not talked about and we know so little about them because they have such a devastating effect on all the lives they touch.  Right now there is no improvement on the treatment offered for the past 50 years.  That is why funding research is so important.

Brain tumours - the facts

Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40.Over 9,100 people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour each year. As many brain tumours are not recorded, the figure could be much higher in reality. That's 25 people every single day.
Over 500 of these are children and young people. 25% of these will die - one child every three days.
Almost 5,000 people lose their lives to a brain tumour every year.
Cancers that begin in another part of the body which go on to result in a tumour in the brain (secondary brain tumours) are estimated to outnumber primary brain tumours by a factor of 3 to 1. That's over 27,000 people.
Brain tumours reduce life expectancy by, on average, 20 years - the highest of any cancer.
Just 14% of adults survive for five years after diagnosis. Brain tumours are the largest cause of preventable or treatable blindness in children.
Childhood brain tumour survivors are 10 times more likely to suffer long term disability than well children. This accounts for 20,000 additional disabled life years for all the children who are diagnosed each year.
Research offers the only real hope of dramatic improvements in the diagnosis, treatment and management of brain tumours. Over £500 million is spent on cancer research in the UK every year, yet less than 2% is spent on brain tumours.
