Story

Welcome to my just giving page! It's nice to be seen by your eyes, your beautiful, beautiful eyes (flattery gets your everywhere, right?) I've got myself in another bind and have signed myself up to cycle 225km through Kenya (really hot, high altitude and hilly Kenya). Physically, I'm not exactly in great shape, and my 33 years often feel more like 88 but I'm a stubborn fool and mainly react to pressure and guilt: sponsor me?

Last year I was lucky/mad enough to fundraise by climbing Mount Kenya. After doing so (and falling quite spectacularly) we visited Ndhiwa, the heart of Team Kenya's work. The following weeks were more inspiring and challenging than any physical effort I might try and put in, but I'm at it again in the hope to encourage more kind donations from splendid people such as your good self, dear reader. Did I mention how beautiful your eyes are?

Team Kenya's vision is for every girl in Kenya to have an equal chance to achieve her potential and be free from poverty. Since 2008, they have built a strong relationship with the community in Ndhiwa, and the Ndhiwa Community Empowerment and Development Project (NCEDP). Working in partnership with NCEDP they have transformed the lives of over 60,000 people in Ndhiwa, including 20,000 young girls.

Ndhiwa is a remote area where adolescent girls are most at risk of extreme poverty due to lack of education and the commonly held view that men and women are not equal.

In Ndhiwa, 50% of girls drop out before completion of secondary school.

Gender based violence at home and in schools is common, Team Kenya have worked with many girls who have been sexually abused by a male family member or teacher.

The rate of HIV/ AIDS in Ndhiwa is the highest in Kenya, with teenage girls most at risk due to lack of education and generally accepted attitudes about sexual abuse and exploitation of girls .
