Story

Mum sadly passed away on 15th November 2020, following complications where an infected cyst on one of her kidneys turned into an abscess and subsequently ruptured.

As you may be aware, both Mum and I (Georgina) were diagnosed with a genetic kidney condition called Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). Five years ago Mum's kidney function had deteriorated to the point where she needed to start dialysis and she opted to proceed with Peritoneal dialysis (PD) at home. This involved connecting herself to the dialysis machine, a process which would take a minimum of 9 hours to complete each night.

Mum and I have been receiving care at the renal department of our local hospital, St. Helier in Carshalton, where ‘The Kidney Fund’ charity is based. The mission of ‘The Kidney Fund’ is to raise funds for research that will lead, step by step, to the successful treatment and eventual elimination of kidney disease.

ADPKD is the most commonly inherited kidney disorder. In the UK, it accounts for around 1 in 10 people on dialysis and 1 in 8 with a kidney transplant. ADPKD is caused by mutations in one or more genes causing them to function abnormally.

In Mums case it was thankfully only passed on to one of her three children. ADPKD has a 'dominant' inheritance pattern and there is 1 in 2 chance that an affected parent will pass on ADPKD to each child born. ADPKD is at present incurable, but treatments can help reduce the symptom burden and lower risk of complications.
