London Marathon 2022 · 2 October 2022 ·
My amazing daughter is 17. Two years ago she was diagnosed with Turner Syndrome (TS) after years of health issues and investigations. This was a late diagnosis and was a lot for her to take in, but she has, of course, taken it all in her stride, adjusting to a regime of injecting medication and frequent hospital visits to monitor her TS.
TS is a chromosome abnormality affecting only females, caused by the complete or partial deletion of the X chromosome. The incidence of TS is approximately 1:2000 live female births. The way in which it presents varies considerably from one individual to another, and girls and women with TS may have only a few or several of the features associated with it, but short stature and infertility are nearly always present.
On receiving this diagnosis my daughter and I looked for a support group to understand it better and to hopefully link up with others with TS. We found the Turner Syndrome Support Society. They have been an amazing support, linking us with other families and accurate information in a way that doesn't induce anxiety!
So, I am running the London Marathon to thank them for the support and reassurance that we so needed, and to raise funds so they can continue to offer this to families and women affected by TS.
