Story
My Life was saved in May 2021 after I experienced acute liver failure in the space of 5 days due secondary to an acute hepatitis infection.
Unbeknown to me, who had slipped into the end stages of liver failure and was in and out of consciousness, I was caught by the safe care of The Royal London and Kings College Hospital, placed into an induced coma, blue lighted through the night to Kings Liver Intensive Care Specialists and put to the top of the UK donor list over night. With hardly any living cells remaining in my liver my family were informed I had hours not days to live.
1.5 days after going on the donor list I received life saving Liver Transplant Surgery. I owe my life and the air I receive each day to my donor and all those that supported me. Now I wish to give back where I can by delivering evidence based research to share how Psychotherapeutic interventions will support transplant recipients recovery and long term health.
As an avid cyclist before transplant I returned to my bike 6 months post transplant and began my personal journey to cycling again.
13 months post transplant I entered the British Transplant Games and won 2 medals.
14 months post transplant I entered the European Transplant and Dialysis Games and won 2 bronze medals...What a joy to find my Transplant Sport Community and to have raised over £2500 to kick start my research project. Thank you for all those who have supported me this far.
Recently I was delighted to discover I have now been selected for Team Great Britain & Northern Ireland Cycling to compete at The World Transplant Games Perth Australia 2023!
My inspiration, drive and journey to train, get stronger and live each day with gratitude in my heart and in good health is beholden to my donor and all those that have supported me along the road to allow me to continue my journey here. As I look out to Perth, where I hope to attend the World Transplant Games 2023 (WTG) I foresee the opportunity to don my 'Mental Health Professional Hat' as well as my cycling shorts!
Attending the WTG will offer a unique opportunity not only for me to compete but to deliver a piece of preliminary research across diverse global transplant comunity. This is an extremely fruitful opportunity to produce a vast evidence base with strong scientific validity. For this I am extremely excited as I know in my heart how this will offer such a profound contribution to the field of transplant care and donor recipient health and recovery.
