Three Peaks Challenge · 24 July 2010

Every day in the UK, another 240 people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke. The Stroke Association is the only charity in the UK providing lifelong support for all stroke survivors and their families.

Story

Hello!

I'm attempting the 3 Peaks Challenge on 24th / 25th July.  I have funded the cost of the challenge myself.

The aim is to climb the three highest peaks in the UK in 24 hours - starting at Ben Nevis in Scotland at 4,409ft, then into England for Scafell Pike at 3,210ft and then over to Wales for Snowdon at 3,560ft.  Thats a total hike of 24 miles ascending over 11,000ft  - all within 24 hours including travelling between them all in a minibus.  We will be starting very early on Saturday morning and will climb Snowdon in the dark. Nice!

Sadly mountains are few and far between in South London so training has been limited to say the least.  I'm now confident in walking accross Battersea Park though so how much harder can it be?!!

I'm doing all this in aid of The Stroke Association as my wife Rachel recently lost a family member to a stroke. During a hospistal visit we were struck at how young many of the stroke victims were.

Every year, over 130,000 people only in the UK have a stroke – one person every five minutes.   Most are over 65 but it also happens to the young including children & babies. A stroke is the third most common cause of death in the UK, and it is the single biggest cause of severe disability.

The Stroke Association’s focus is to prevent strokes and to provide support for people who have had a stroke. They also provide support to patient’s families through information and community services.

Any support you can offer would be gratefully received.

Thanks!

Jerry
