My daughter Christie and I, together with a group of friends will be zip sliding off the top of the Newport Transporter Bridge on March 3rd 2013. Part of the challenge will be climbing up on to the top of the Transporter Bridge, which stands at over 50m high - We are raising funds for the Army Benevolent Fund in memory of Private James Prosser of the 2nd Battallion, The Royal Welsh. James was just 21 when he was killed in Afghanistan. James joined the army in July 2008, completed his basic training at Catterick and passed out in February 2009. He flew out to Afghanistan on July 27th 2009 and was killed serving his country on September 27th 2009. James gave his tomorrow for our today, please help us to raise funds for the tremendous work undertaken by the Army Benevolent Fund - the Soldiers Charity.
Since 1944, The Army Benevolent Fund – now The Soldiers’ Charity, has been helping soldiers, veterans and their families in times of need.
Former soldiers from campaigns including Northern Ireland, The Falklands, the Gulf, Bosnia, Sierra Leone and Iraq have been helped by the charity, as well, of course, as Afghanistan. The charity has responded to the changing need of soldiers and former soldiers, and has committed to increasing its fundraising to meet those needs.
ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is the British Army’s own national charity, giving a lifetime of support to serving and retired soldiers. It looks after the wider Army family too, giving financial assistance to partners, children, sometimes even former spouses, recognising the sacrifices which they make and the efforts which they themselves go to. This might mean giving money to an individual family for a respite holiday after an operational tour has separated them for a long period, or a grant to help with a play park for forces children, or helping former soldiers with hardship relief, especially in the current economic climate, or through mobility assistance and home modifications following critical injury. They do not make judgements about circumstances – if there is a genuine need, they are there for them. Currently they help over 4,800 people annually.
