Story
At the end of June 2008, newly 9 years old, I was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes- That's half my life I have had to deal with multiple daily injections, finger prick testing, carbohydrate counting every meal, hospital visits and worst of all the stigma and confusion around the condition, and unfortunately I am not the only person.
Diabetes affects almost 300,00 people in Scotland, and only 13% of that figure is Type 1. There are 2 methods of controlling T1 Diabetes- daily insulin injections or an insulin pump which is connected to the sufferer 24/7, 365 days a year. I am lucky enough to be on a pump, which are becoming much more popular as they are a far easier method of controlling the blood sugars, but unfortunately cost the NHS an estimated £5,000 each to set up. By fundraising through my skydive, I not only hope to make people more aware of the life changing, physically demanding condition but also to raise money which can lead on step closer to a cure.
