Over the next year, as part of GUCFS, I will be raising funds for Scottish Associated of Mental Health. 

In August,  I will be doing a 10,000ft skydive in memory of Alex Hernandez. 

Alex was a fellow budding Parasitologist at UofG. He was funny, endearing, kind and suffered from Schizophrenia. At the end of April this year, Alex took his own life. 1 in 10 suicides in the UK are committed by young adults.

1 in 5 young people suffer from mental health issues in Scotland. Until Alex’s death, I had never fully considered the effect mental health issues have on young adults. I was shocked and deeply upset but also annoyed at my own ignorance. Statistically, we will all have at least 1 friend who suffers from mental health issues. This year, I want to help to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and raise as much money for SAMH to help them in this process. 

I will soon be facing my biggest fear and hurtling out of a plane and no doubt peeing my pants…If you would like to support GUCFS, SAMH and myself in our fight against mental health issues, please donate generously!
