Story

I realised that I had cycled 1,000 miles locally since lockdown and thought that that would have been a good opportunity to raise some money. So, in helping WaterAid to celebrate their work with the Glastonbury Festival, I've decided to do another 1,000 because, with apologies to the great Scottish bards, The Proclaimers, I could ride 500 miles and I could ride 500 more.

So how about joining me? There's only one rule, ride 1,000 miles (and even then you can always set a lower target). There's no time limit - a fit club cyclist might do it in a few weeks. A fat, old bloke like me will take a few months. If all you have ever done is ride that old bike you got out of the garage in March to the shops and back it might take a year or two. You can do it on your exercise bike in the garage, or on your nice new electric bike. Or on a Santander bike in London. It doesn't matter, as long as you have a go (and raise some money of course).

I have linked this page to my Strava account, so you will be able to see how I'm getting along.

If you can't or don't want to join me on a bike please consider sponsoring me and help the 1 in 10 people in the world without access to clean water and the 1 in 4 who don't have a toilet.

Why WaterAid? Anyone who knows me will know that I've been involved with them since 1982. Before the virus I was planning to be at the Glastonbury Festival as a WaterAid volunteer for the 12th time. Glastonbury is a wonderful opportunity for WaterAid to reach many thousands of people in person and millions on TV and not being there will leave a big hole in their funding. My ride, and maybe yours as well, will go a small way to filling that hole.

Clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene should be a normal part of everyone’s daily life. Without all three, people can’t live dignified, healthy lives. With all three, they can unlock their potential, break free from poverty and change their lives for good. With clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene, children are born healthier. They get the chance to go to school and grow up to become adults. Women and men get to earn a living. Whole communities start to thrive. It sounds normal and it should be.
