The Wall Challenge · 19 June 2021
Legend has it that in AD126 The Emperor Hadrian sent a cohort of troops to Brittania to see why the construction of the Wall at the Northernmost point of the Roman Empire was behind schedule. He had two requests - 'Get it finished on budget and bring me back a bottle of this elixir I have heard of called Newcastle Brown Ale' Unfortunately the troops opted not to follow the Fosse Way because of bank holiday traffic and instead took the M6 and landed in Carlisle. Realising their mistake they sent their best runner Marcus Virilius Ingelsanus to fetch a bottle.
After days of travel he arrived in the great city of Newcastle and purchased a bottle of the brown fluid but because of his thirst from the long journey he decided to down the bottle (and several more). Day turned to night and young Marcus Virilius delighted in everything that the big city had to offer. Several days later he realised that he would not be welcomed back in Carlisle and decided to live out his life in exile in Newcastle.
On the 19th June 2021, Mark Ingleson, whose family is descended from the exiled runner has decided to return from the North East to meet his brother Dave and their mate Jonathan in Carlisle to run in the footsteps of his forefathers for the ultimate prize ... Whoever crosses the Millennium Bridge first receives a full bottle of cold Newcastle Brown.
