Story
‘’ you waint manage it you are too unfit’’ . I’ll never forgot those words. It was the response my dad gave me when I asked if we could do a charity bike ride as part of my stag do to raise money for the Chatsfield Suit at Doncaster Hospital because without that place, he would have never been at the side of me on my wedding day. He may have had a point on the fitness front but I genuinely think
it was that he didn’t want his cancer to be any part of my wedding. Ever since then, I have toyed with the idea of doing something and recent events have just made me think it is time to stop putting it off.
Cancer rips families apart. Those who survive are never thesame again. For 6 years, we had to endure an appointment a month waiting to find out the inevitable- it had returned.
We lost Kirsty’s Auntie Barbar - life and sole of a family party ❤️ beat it and it returned.
Recently, again my life has been turned upside by this s**t. Below are the three inspirations.
Dad
The fittest bloke I and most people knew. Anything you read
that gives you cancer, my dad didn’t do. Died aged 59.
Clare Miller- friend- boss- mentor.
Everyone needs someone who believes in them. She saw
something in me and gave me so much time and effort to turn me into who I am
today and do the job I love to do. Not only that but she is a friend and a brilliant
one at that. She took time to care when others had no idea what I was going
through. The most brilliant head teacher who has been forced to retire; the
only thing she wants is money raising for others. Still fighting.
Joanne Gates- Auntie- Eva’s Godmother.
My uncle had to get over losing his big brother. He always
did and still does try looking out for me for my dad. Then bang. His partner
comes down with the same illness. Still fighting.
So what is the plan? I aim to complete a 59 mile bike ride
around local cricket grounds to raise money for Macmillan cancer support who also support the Chatsfield Suite, Doncaster Hospital. 59 miles because of my dad’s age when he died and cycling because of my dad’s love of it. Cricket ties in the three people mentioned above.
Jo has just started to get into game and goes with my uncle.
Clare has been around cricket all her life; following her dad round the county and now her son.
My dad, well he didn’t love the game but loved watching me
play sport and just wanted to be where I was. He would also often bike to cricket games in his cycling gear and I would stand and think jesus just pack some normal clothes to get changed into. What I would give to have him stood at the side of the pitch in his cycling gear now.
Tuesday the 9th of August will be the date. No real reason except I want to start the journey by taking Eva to nursey on the back of my dad’s bike and then do a tour shown below on a map. When we found
out we were pregnant with Eva my dad was in hospital. He was the first person we told hoping it gave him a boost. He did come out back but died 4 months before she was born with a scan picture in his ICU ward.
And there is my point and inspiration. We never know what is
round the corner. You never know who it will take next. It is robbing people of seeing loved ones grow up and society is losing people who have so much to give. I cannot change the word but just hoping to raise some money and make a small difference. I have set a target of £500 but would love to raise more.
Thank you :)
Update- genuinely amazed and taken aback by the generosity. Met the target within 2 hours! So I have decided to double it and aim for £1000. Thank you :)
Update 2- so after one day I reached £1000( some cash to pay in).Still over a week until the ride so going to up it to £1500 and hope for the best :) Thank you again I am so taken aback
Update 3- again thank you so much. Hit the target but the total is actually higher as I have some cash to pay in. Overwhelmed if I'm honest. Not going to set a target anymore I'm just going see what it achieves:) Thank you.
