Story
Thanks for visiting my page. I'm raising money for the British Heart Foundation's research and I'd be so grateful for your support. The BHF has helped halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory disease in the UK but sadly every day hundreds of people lose their lives, including some of my dearest family and friends.
I am swimming the English Channel in August, (yes actually the channel, the busiest shipping route in the world) not a virtual swim in a pool. I am in a team of four (21/8/19) and we take it in turns to swim for an hour each in a set order. There are lots of do’s and don’ts to qualify for a channel crossing that we have to stick to. The most significant is that there’s no wetsuit just a regular swimming costume, one hat and googles.
The swim is likely to be partly at night and apart from the shipping there are jelly fish. (And don’t ask if we cover ourselves in goose fat as apart from being disgusting it doesn’t make any difference, it’s going to be really cold (17C or at max 19C or just over 60 degrees Fahrenheit)
In preparation I have been training flat out in the pool over the winter trying to get my qualifying swim of 3000 metres in an hour. I did my first open water swim in 13 degrees in April at Divers Cove. I will practice in Dover harbour in the lead up getting used to the sea and building up to a qualifying swim of two hours in water of less than 16 degrees.
I’ll keep everyone posted on my progress in the hope that you will sponsor me so that I achieve my goal.
Thank you to everyone who has donated to this good cause to try to prevent heart disease.
If you want to follow the swim this is the tracking link, my boat is Gallivant select that any you will see the progress
