We provide help and hope to everyone living with dementia.

Story

As many of you will know, mum and dad have both been diagnosed with fairly advanced Alzheimer's and had lived with us for the past year. Sadly we are no longer able to provide the level of professional care which they need and, as we had always said "safe first, happy second" they have joined the community at a care home in Ipswich.

One of the saddest aspects of Alzheimer's is the inability to make memories and to be able to recall recent events. Over the past year we have laughed with them, challenged them to do things and provided a safe and happy environment....which has all been forgotten by them and that, for me, is the hardest part of this. Yes, the endless repetition of questions can be frustrating but realising that the time spent that afternoon planting up bulbs has already slipped away is heart breaking.

In one of my favourite films, "What we did on our holiday" (do watch it!), Billy Connolly plays a granddad dying of cancer and says "well at least I didn't have Alzheimer's". So true in a way although neither are pleasant.

So, on 7th June 2019, we will be joining the Alzheimer's Society for an overnight sponsored walk up (and down!) Mount Snowdon.

If the money which we raise with this event goes even the slightest way to saving others having to go through this then it will have been worth it.

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.
