RIDE UPDATE – 28May 2012-05-28
I DID IT!!
It was a beautiful sunny day, the wind was kind and the cooler coastal air was lovely. We set off at 7.20 am and arrived back in Norwich at 4.45 pm. Ride time 6 hours 55 minutes. We had some great support from friends and family who met up with us at the various stop points which REALLY helped to spur us on – especially the food, cold water and Ice Cream they provided! I’ve added some pictures that were taken throughout the day.
Thank you to everyone who sponsored me, NORCAS and I are VERY grateful. I had an absolutely fantastic day and loved it so much I might even do it again next year!
Kate :)
THANK YOU 'Cycles UK' for providing my FREE helmet - great of them to show their support when so many are taking part in the Norwich100. Also gave great advice on energy gels! They're really helpful in there so if you need any bike advice I'd highly recommend you pop in and see them :) http://www.cyclesuk.com/article/norwich_bike_shop
17.05.12 TRAINING UPDATE - With less than 10 days until the ‘100’ I have not let the glorious British weather put me off getting out on the bike. You may also be pleased to hear I have finally invested (courtesy of my Dad!) in a beautiful new pink waterproof jacket which is now affectionately referred to as the beacon! It’s rather bright and as the old road safety ad’s used to say ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ you certainly can’t miss me in this jacket!
I have to say the novelty of cycling has started to wear off a little and I am looking forward to cycling for pleasure again! Thanks to some ddvice from my colleague Mike Farrington my training plan for the next few days is to start to cut down the intensity, doing shorter distances so I am ready and full of energy for the big day.
I hope to update this page again when I have completed the 100 on a glorious sunny day - but I won’t hold my breath (on the weather!).
Thanks again to all those who have sponsored me and to those that haven’t please sponsor me whatever you can afford every single pound helps....x
23.04.12 TRAINING UPDATE – Since my last update I’ve had a skiing trip to Italy which thankfully I obtained no injuries from, so the training has started to ramp up since my return – oh and recovered from some awful girl flu! I am very lucky to have some great friends who are also doing the Norwich 50 and 100 so we venture out doing various distances together (thanks to Mike who usually plans the routes). Mike has also completely stripped my bike of everything including my bell to make it as light and aerodynamic as possible – every little helps! I will be taking part in this year’s Norwich 100 bike event. This is a 100 mile bike ride that starts at Norwich Cathedral, heading north to Reepham, up to the coast and east to Sheringham, skirting the Broads before returning to the Finish at the Cathedral.
We have started to venture out after work doing 10/15 miles keeping the longer distances for the weekends. We managed to do 50 miles on Sunday which is a new personal best for me, now all I need to do is add another 50 and I’m there – gulp! The weather has not been kind during these trips out getting rained and hailed on in the last couple of weeks! Sadly I still don’t have any waterproofs but I’m seriously considering some for the actual 100!
If you haven’t already please sponsor me – every pound gives me that extra little bit of motivation to complete this rather big (I’m just starting to realise!) task!! Look out for more updates soon...x
11.03.12 TRAINING UPDATE – in the last month I have managed to get out on the bike every weekend with some good and some not so good rides! After a particularly difficult ride I had my bike checked and it turned out my back break was on, no wonder I was struggling! Ventured out the following weekend and had a far better training session, although it was raining I got soaked in my wind proof not water proof jacket! Went out yesterday, first 19 miles were brilliant the following 6 miles got harder and harder until I realised I had a flat tyre! Let’s hope next weekend is less eventful and I can clock up some more miles!
I am doing this to raise much needed funds for the Charity I work for ‘NORCAS’ who offer many fantastic services throughout Norfolk and Suffolk to those affected directly and indirectly by Alcohol, Drugs and Gambling.
Counselling, Motivation, Recovery and Abstinence Groups, Alternative Therapies, Creative Groups, Homeless Outreach, Welfare Rights, Supported Housing, Hostel Support and the one closest to my heart the ‘Over 50s Outreach Service’ are just some of the great adult services we provide.
NORCAS also offers support to young Carers ‘Too Much Too Young’, ‘Believe Achieve Succeed’ which offers support for 18 – 25 year olds and ‘Street Alcohol and Sexual Health information ‘Wise Up Knowing your limits’ workshops.
As an independent charity NORCAS can't rely on funding and grants and that means they rely on fundraising like this.
So back to the task in hand, I’ve started my training and have headed out on some very cold January bike rides which have required 3 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of gloves and as many layers I can wear! The furthest I have cycled is 38 miles so I have a long way to go!
I’ll keep this page updated with pictures and training progress so feel free to check in and see how I’m doing.
Every penny counts so please sponsor me whatever you can afford, the money really will be greatly received by all Staff and Clients at NORCAS.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Many thanks
