Those of you who know me well enough will know this as another crazy way for Katherine to ignore real life... While I was training for the London Marathon I decided that I would sign up for a Half in September in order to encourage me to keep running and not just give up altogether in relief! While searching for an event I found several in a row that all sounded appealing, 4 in fact, each one Sunday after the next. Instead of chasing, like a normal human being, to pick the one which was most convenient I just decided I would do all of them. What did I have to lose? I've decided to call it
"Not in a month of Sundays!"
Well, it turns out that I did give up running in relief as soon as London was over, I've also ignored it during the recent heat wave but now I've had no excuse to put the trainers back on and get back down to the canal towpath. It's not been easy to get back to it!
Sue Ryder is my chosen charity this time, I see every day what an amazing job they do as our local hospice Leckhampton Court, look after many of my patients. However, more recently I had a more personal perspective. A lovely friend lost her dear Mum to cancer, she and the whole family were lovingly cared for and supported by the hospice and nothing was too much trouble. I sat with them one evening into the early hours and felt how different it was not to be there as a nurse but just as a friend. It takes £10,000 a day to keep the hospice running with all that it does from the inpatient unit to the day hospice, befriending, carer support, bereavement support, the list goes on. They so deserve every penny that we can raise and if it costs me a few blisters in the mean time, that's nothing!!
