Story

Yet again on New Years Day we will be braving the seas of Broadstairs for a swim, if you would like to see us suffer the cold then please come and support us 12pm Viking Bay.

We are doing this for all the babies and children that are born with a liver condition that at times can be fatal.

At 9 weeks old Elouise was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia and at 11 weeks underwent a major life saving operation called a Kasai Procedure; so far this has been successful and with few medicines she continues to develop as a normal 6 year old should thanks to the work of the CLDF.

Biliary atresia is a condition in which inflammation develops within the bile ducts around the time of birth. The inflammation can occur in any of the bile ducts both inside and outside of the liver. This leads to bile duct damage and reduces the flow of bile, which subsequently causes scarring (fibrosis) of the liver. The bile ducts outside the liver are always irreversibly damaged preventing any bile flow into the gut. The gall bladder is also affected

A key aspect of CLDF’s work is funding medical (basic and clinical), nursing and social research connected with addressing the basic mechanisms, causes, prevention, diagnosis, cure and treatment of diseases of the liver and biliary system in children

  • At least two children are diagnosed with a liver disease every day in the UK.
  • More Children in the UK are currently diagnosed with a liver disease than childhood leukaemia
  • Most childhood liver diseases are life threatening; all mean a lifetime of care
  • There are over 100 different liver diseases that can affect babies, children or young people
  • For most childhood liver diseases the cause is unknown
  • For most childhood liver disease there is no cure
  • CLDF is the only organisation in the UK dedicated to stamping out childhood liver disease

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Children's Liver Disease Foundation gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Please donate to this very worthwhile and relatively unknown charity.

Thank you for visiting my Just Giving page and for your donation.  See you in 2011!!!
