We support Royal Marines and their familes to overcome their challenges

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

To say this is "TOUGH" is an understatement. 71km in 24hours with no sleep - straight through from 09:00 on Saturday morning until we finish at 09:00 Sunday morning. I’m doing this with a team and we carry all our own kit, food, waterproofs, spare clothes and water. We canoe, mountain bike and hike the 71km. This isn't something we're simulating in a cosy air conditioned gym environment where we can rotate or take a break when we feel like it. This is out in the Lake District, canoeing Lake Windermere and Lake Bassenthwaite (a total of 31km, the equivalent of canoeing the English Channel. And I for one know how far that is!), mountain-biking off road 21k and hiking 19k up and over the biggest mountain in England - all in 24 hours with no rest.
There are 14 of us in the team and we are all striving to get fitter, leaner and stronger than we have ever been so we can accomplish this challenge in a good time. Two years ago I swam the English Channel with a team, and that was hard – but I think this is going to be a much tougher challenge for me. This is hard on all the joints, and there are no periods of rest. It’s a relentless 24 hour grind, using every muscle and every ounce of energy and mental strength.
Physically I’ve got a lot of work to do to prepare for this, but I’m in training and I’m looking forward to pushing myself and spending 24 hours with a fantastic team and all the camaraderie that comes with it.

WHY THE ROYAL MARINES CHARITY?
As some of you might know I have many links with the Royal Navy. My other half is a RN Marine Engineer, my brother was in the Navy and my Stepfather did 30 years man and boy!
The more I looked into the Royal Marines, who they help and the job they do, the more I realised these bootnecks were worth their weight in gold. They are definitely a certain breed. They are tough men, with big hearts and a wicked sense of humour. They are fearless, they are also the first into battle, they are front line soldiers and the elite UK force. The Royal Marines are the amphibious troops of the Royal Navy, acknowledged as one of the world's elite commando forces. Held at a very high readiness they can respond quickly to events anywhere around the globe.
75% of Royal Marines have been deployed in operations over the past 3 years. The Royal Marines Charity has a massive responsibility in that it looks after both serving and retired Royal Marines, and their dependents - this converts into some 125,000 potential beneficiaries.
It goes without saying that they seek to support their wounded and injured in any way they can. But they also seek to improve the quality of life for each and every Royal Marine. And they continue this support long after their people have severed their formal links to the Corps. Since their merger with The C Group, they now actively seek to build lasting relationships with leading UK companies so that Royal Marines leaving the Corps can go on to find meaningful second careers.
Sadly, and very importantly, they also provide a death grant to the next of kin of any member of the Corps who has died in service.
Do we need any more reason than that to support this great charity? Please help me and the Carpe Diem team raise as much as we can for these men who give so much for us.
Thank you!
