Story
We received the tragic news that Jo Thompson lost his battle with depression and mental illness on Thursday the 24th of November 2016. He went missing on the 11th of November 2016, in the fortnight in between we received so much love and support in the hunt to find him. The words went out to hundreds of thousands of people all over the globe.
We were touched and amazed at just how much people cared. I wanted to take this opportunity on the back of the social media campaign to raise as much as possible for Young Minds.
Mental health problems affect about 1 in 10 children and young people. They include depression, anxiety and conduct disorder, and are often a direct response to what is happening in their lives.
Alarmingly, however, 70% of children and young people who experience a mental health problem have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age.
Suicide is the biggest killer of young people – male and female – under 35 in the UK. In 2015, 1,659 young people took their own lives. That equates to over four per day. Every year many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling.
Mental health services are so grossly under-funded and the problem is only getting worse. With our help, more young people will have access to the help and support they need to treat and manage their mental health problems, with appropriate support and education, many young suicides can be prevented.
