A year ago I knew what a Glioma was; I am a doctor after all!
But now I am all too aware of the horrendous effects Glioblastoma will inevitably cause. In the last year I have seen both my Mother-in-law and a young patient go through the devastating diagnosis and terminal care of this life destroying disease.
Kit - my Mother-in-law was the best. You hear horrible tales and jokes about the Mother-in-law but none of these would apply. She was a fantastic lady; always putting everyone first. Always a kind word to say. My very own Paddington Bear - wherever she went she made friends. A pleasure to be with and I am privileged to have had her in my life. She taught me lots that she will never realise; and I thank her for that.
In the summer of 2018 Kit was diagnosed with an advanced inoperable, incurable Grade 4 Glioblastoma. Just a mere four months later we lost her to this hideous evil. She was tough, never grumbled and I miss her, so very much.
Jessica - well what can I say? A ray of light at such a young age. I met Jessica aged 8 years old. A high flyer, a bright light in the world, full of happiness and potential. Jessica was diagnosed with Glioblastoma in November and went through all possible therapies including surgery, and chemotherapy. She received the best that medicine could offer but sadly it wasn't enough. She was a tough girl, she was an inspiration for us all as she went through months of intensive treatment. But as I know too well Glioblastoma always wins, and she passed away peacefully with her family at her side aged just 9 years old just 9 months later.
Not many patients inspire me as she did - a fantastic personality I will remember forever.
BUT we need to find answers! We need to stop the destruction Glioblastomas have on people and their families. We need more research.
