Story
This June, we're Walking Together with people from across the UK to raise funds for the UK's leading bowel cancer charity.Bowel Cancer UK
Lean In Belfast pays tribute to Sheila Fleming Mitchel - an early supporter, connector and enabler of one of the largest networks across Ireland of women focused on achieving gender equality in the workplace.
Sadly Sheila passed away from Bowel Cancer on 12th June. The cruelty of this disease is epitomised by Sheila’s diagnosis with a frighteningly short time of only 4 weeks between her diagnosis and her shocking passing at the age of 65.
One of the original “Women in Tech” in 1997, Sheila jointly led the start-up of Liberty Information Technology, one of the early direct investment IT companies in Northern Ireland.
She was a passionate supporter of women in the workplace and society at large.
“Sheila gave her time and advice through mentorship to our members when we were establishing Lean In Belfast back in 2013. She helped so many women, including myself navigate our careers offering mentorship and friendship along the way. A wonderful person with inimitable spirit. I’m deeply saddened to hear of her passing and send my deepest condolences to Maurice her partner and her family, friends and colleagues”. Nuala Murphy - Lean In Belfast
Instead of our planned networking event this month we are calling on all our Lean In sisters across Ireland to walk-in Sheila’s name and to raise awareness for this cruel disease.
