Story

About Louie's S.M.I.L.E.S

Louis was a very happy boy with a smile for everyone.

When Louis was 8 ½ in 2010, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called a Neuroendocrine tumour. Nothing could prepare us for this. Our lives were turned upside down with the fear of the unknown at what may happen.

Louis was remarkable and brave, and despite the changes to his life and routine hospital visits and treatments, he remained positive, happy and still smiling. He was known for his smile. This gave us great strength.

During our lengthy stays in various hospitals we became familiar with the hospital scene, made great friends and received the best care. Louis would quite often receive a little toy of some kind that he could choose as a reward for being so brave when receiving treatments.

After speaking with staff and play specialists over time, it became apparent that some wards received more funding, therefore had more funds available to purchase these little gifts, which the play specialists took time to go out and buy.

Some wards didn’t have as much funding, but they still managed to have toys available.

Louis was very likable and received such good care in our local hospitals (Sarum Ward in Salisbury district hospital and G4 ward/Piam Brown ward in Southampton General Hospital), and never feared going to stay there, which we did every few weeks, on a regular basis.

Sadly, Louis passed away at home in 2012. We were still shown great support with our loss from these children’s wards and families still attending them. We wanted to give something back and continue to help these wards and families, by doing something which may seem very simple and small in the grand scheme of things, but makes a huge difference.

We decided to set up a non-profit charity and called it Louie’s S.M.I.L.E.S (Sharing Memories in Louie’s Everlasting Smile).

Our intention is to raise funds and purchase toys & books, and deliver to local children’s wards on a regular basis so that every ward had sufficient amounts of toys aside ready for every child who was having treatments in hospital.

These toys are being given to the children to keep and take home, in the hope that it makes them smile, and gives them some relief during what can be a difficult time.

We hope this also helps the wards as they may no longer need to purchase these toys. We aim to keep fundraising and keep delivering. This has been made possible with the help of everyone’s continual support, and we thank you very much for taking the time to read our website.
