Story
I'm walking 30 miles in April to support families facing dementia. Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimers disease. They help people with dementia stay independent for longer, and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, helping families take back control when they are struggling.
My mum who died a year ago was a dementia champion as her mum died with dementia 50 years ago. She fought for better services for those with dementia and their families from this point on. As a result Rutland has a great Admiral nurse service which dementia uk have made possible with the council. I am now benefiting from this service as I try my best to support my lovely husband who has Lewy Body dementia and posterior cortical atrophy, a rare dementia affecting the back of the brain. He is now in a nursing home which was one of the hardest decisions of my life. My Admiral Nurse supported me on this journey and still does. Money raised will ensure there are increasing numbers of Admiral Nurses to support many others on what can be a very lonely journey for the carer and a very frightening and often frustrating one for the person with dementia. Thank you for reading this.
