Support the vital rescue work of BDMLR

Elizabeth Larbalestier is raising money for British Divers Marine Life Rescue

Protect What You Love · 6 December 2018

British Divers Marine Life Rescue is an organisation dedicated to the rescue and well being of all marine animals in distress around the UK. Continuing to train teams of volunteers and maintaining specialised equipment is vital and your support will help us continue our important work.

Story

This is my ongoing fundraising page to support BDMLR Cornwall Seal Hospital. Whilst I am of course involved in cetacean rescues the seal hospital is close to my heart after hosting pups at home

Funds from this page contributed to the building of a seal hospital, ... materials ONLY (my project management time was pro bono and trades experts like Rich Shilton worked for 4 months for next to nothing). I tell you this not for you to say "well done you" but for you to know this place runs on love and goodwill and to reassure you that EVERY PENNY goes to the pups.

Hattie was the final (139th) seal patient we cared for at our home hospital and Hattie's story was a sad one, since while we did indeed relieve her suffering we were unable to return her to health. We gave each seal at our "home hospital" a quote... hers was "let your hopes not you hurts shape your future". This quote now hangs in our new facility as a reminder to us all and as a legacy for her. Thank you to Mark Richards Art.

I was lucky enough to rescue Ostrich our first ever patient in the new hospital... which felt like a baton pass.

Now the facility is up and running your donations will help with ongoing costs such as medication, fish and other hospital supplies, together with utilities and facility maintenance.

Volunteering for BDMLR and inviting my friends and clients to donate to BDMLR is one way I can give back to the ocean as part of my business CSR as a sole trader t/a going coastal blue.

Did you know the grey seal is one of the rarest seal species and that the UK has nearly 40% of the grey seal population? They should be our nationally celebrated marine mammal. They are globally rare and legally protected in the UK.

We each see lots of them in Cornwall, so it is hard to believe how honoured we are to share time and space with these amazing animals.

Also did you know that Cornwall BDMLR medics have around 30% of the national callout numbers (the UK number closing in on 2500 per year)...

Not all of these are rescues some turn out to be simply a case of monitoring them and allowing them space to rest, or checking them over and letting them go as part of our triage... or they bolt before we find them :-)

Most medics buy their own kit (such as cages for transportation) and donate time and fuel free.

When supporting initial rehabilitation of pups there are a variety of costs to consider such as vets, medication and fish stock and hospital utilities...

If you can help please do (no donation is too small)... even sharing this fundraiser helps - or perhaps you know of potential corporate sponsors, you can let me know about who can help us continue to protect these amazing creatures.

You can even sponsor a sell pen for a year (if keen email me).

Massive thanks for your help.Lizzi x
