Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My brother in law, Phil, was diagnosed with Cerebellar Ataxia which forced him, a few years ago, to take early retirement due to ill health and my sister has cut down to part time working to help support him and she is also a Trustee for Ataxia UK.
Ataxia is a rare neurological condition causing an unusual shrinkage of the brain, leading to co-ordination difficulties, problems with balance, speech, sight and extreme fatigue. In Phil's case, he now uses a stick or wheelchair at all times and his speech can be difficult to understand. It is a progressive disease so will continuously get more debilitating, and there is currently no cure or treatment.
Ataxia UK is the leading national charity in the UK for people affected by any type of Ataxia. They fund research into finding treatments and cures, and offer advice, information and support to people affected by the condition.
According to a survey completed by Ataxia UK, less than 13% of the UK population have heard of Ataxia. I therefore want to try and raise as much awareness and as much money as possible for such a worthy cause.
When I turned 50 last year I set myself the challenge to run a half marathon and for the last year I have been gradually increasing my running distances and now seems the perfect time to combine that ambition with raising funds for this important and little known charity.
Therefore on Sunday 10th October 2021, I will be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon for Ataxia UK.
I would really appreciate any support, no matter how small, and to please continue to share the word about Ataxia.
Thank you
Lizzie xx
