Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are raising money for M.E Research (https://cureme.lshtm.ac.uk)
whilst aiming to raise awareness of this condition which is unfamiliar to many and often misunderstood by those who know it exists.

The CureME research group is based at the London School of Hygeine & Tropical Medicine. We are a 15-person team doing research into ME/CFS, and our team includes doctors, nurses, statisticians, epidmiologists, lab scientists and administrators.

CureME is at the forefront of participatory research into ME/CFS in the UK. Our work has focused on improving recognition, diagnosis and treatment of ME/CFS, leading to the opening of the UK's first ME/CFS Biobank - now open to external researchers across the globe.

The biobank stores over 35,000 aliquots (small tubes) of blood from over 650 study participants and is accompanied by a huge database of clinical information, blood test resuls and questionnaire data. Researchers from across the world can apply to use our biobank, and we work with collaborators in Europe, the USA, Canada, Latin America, Australia and Israel.

M.E is close to DGP's heart due to one of our colleagues daughter suffering with this condition. This affects not just the person who is suffering with this condition but also the whole family.

As a Team we are all generally unfit and have been training to take part in this 24.6 mile walk along the south east coast. This will be a challenge but nothing in comparison to people who suffer with this condition.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) is a long-term (chronic), fluctuating, neurological condition that causes symptoms affecting many
body systems, more commonly the nervous and immune systems. M.E. affects an estimated 250,000 people in the UK, and around 17 million people worldwide.

People with M.E. experience debilitating pain, fatigue and a range of other symptoms associated with post-exertional malaise, the body and brain’s inability to recover after expending even small amounts of energy.

As you are visiting this page, can we kindly ask that you give a few minutes of your time to learn a little more about this condition (some suggested links below, the YouTube link being a trailer for a moving documentary about an ME sufferer, a documentary which was even screened in parliament).
