On September 11 2009 I gave birth to two very beautiful baby boys, however, shortly before we were discharged my first born son Lucas was diagnosed with a heart murmur. He was whisked off to Bristol Childrens Hospital and was diagnosed with a very serious heart condition. This meant that he had to spend his first 9 weeks fighting for his life undergoing major cardiac surgery to insert a shunt into his heart helping to supply blood to his lungs.
After what seemed like an eternity he came out of surgery whereby it become apparent that although the operation was successful, in the words of his surgeon, “it was too successful”. Consequently the surgeons had to close ICU and preform emergency surgery on the ward to seal off a valve in his heart and stop his lungs flooding with blood.
In the process of saving his life during the second emergency heart operation the surgeon accidentally paralysed Lucas's vocal cords. This meant that once back on the ward he became incredibly poorly due to his inability to breathe properly. As a result we lost him twice due to respiratory arrest, both times he was bagged and fully ventilated by a crash team. It had become apparent that due to the paralysis he was unable to breath on his own and further surgery was necessary. After his second respiratory arrest there was no choice but to immediately rush Lucas into theatre to preform an emergency tracheotomy.
Although he is now home and doing well my little man is still incredibly poorly and now requires 24 hour care from us and a close medical team of experts. He still requires further open heart surgery and it is a daily struggle to ensure that he receives all the support he requires.
Please dig deep and support me to raise awareness for the British heart foundation, I'm a little guy that's been through more than most ever should at such a young age.
Your support would be incredible and make me soo happy xxx
