A Stroke of Bad Luck!

So a short little story about a Stroke

To a healthy man who never smoked.

A football Player, a family man.

With a son called Reg and another called Stan.

With Lydia by his side as his wife.

The Redferns live the happy life.

A man of vision and great creation.

You could never meet a more skilled stone mason.

Now as hard working parents it was time for a break.

A flight to an island in Greece they did take

Off to the sand sun and sea

Reg aged 4 months, Stan not even 3

A holiday so perfect with all going well.

Soon to turn into the holiday from hell.

A stroke of bad luck was soon to arise.

As a stroke came along and took Joe by surprise.

A stroke at home would have been bad enough.

But a stroke while abroad is a stroke of bad luck.

Imagine the doctors all speaking Greek.

You can’t speak their language, infact you you can’t even speak.

A shock to us all at the age of 29.

Enough to send shivers down anyone’s spine.

A month dragged on by which seemed like forever.

And now comes the time to begin the endeavour.

On a flight bound for home the journey began.

Back home to Blighty with Lyd Reg and Stan.

Back home with friends and familiar faces.

Normal food and familiar places.

Oh little stroke where were you from?

You flattened me like an atom bomb.

You sneaky Pete, you rotten egg.

I’ll laugh at you and make you beg.

You thought you’d win, how you were wrong.

You’ve made me and my family Strong!

You challenge me you’re overpowered!

You were just a sneaky coward

I grafted hard and kept my health

You sneaked on me with sneaky stealth

Oh stroke, oh stroke, oh look at you

Look what you have made me do

I’m getting fit in every way

I run for miles every day

With my Solemates friends

My happiness never ends

Just look at you there on your own

My friends, my family, my strength has grown

I thank you for your best creation

The good old stroke association

Just like me they mock you too

They took me in and helped me through

So now I want to raise awareness of strokes in writing

And that strokes are really not all that frightening

I am here to pass the message on

To raise funds I will run a marathon

At my side will be my wife

Once again we will live the happy life

With all the love help and support

A stroke has nothing, a stroke has naught!

JH Lester
