On 2 September I'll be taking part in the ABC Challenge by cycling from Caernarfon to the new Wales Air Ambulance HQ in Dafen, Llanelli.  The route takes in the spectacular and demanding mountains of North and Mid Wales visiting each of the Wales Air Ambulance airbases en-route - it's going to be very tough!

By way of background, I celebrate my 66th Birthday in September and took up cycling just over 3 years ago in an effort to get fit, fight depression and also shed a great deal of unwanted weight.  My husband (an above knee amputee) was already cycling regularly but to make the leap from team supporter/car driver to active participant was, for me, a momentous decision.  After a difficult early phase, I've not only lost over 4 stones, I've also rediscovered my zest for life and have enjoyed the thrills of cycling in New Zealand, Brittany and recently the French Alps.  The mountains of Wales however, combined with the high daily mileages and cumulative fatigue, will be a massive challenge for me. 

The Wales Air Ambulance is a huge asset, providing the resource to get help quickly to people who's lives often depend on a swift response and intervention.  Most people, at some time, will have come across examples of how this service has saved someone's life.

In these times of cutbacks, It's vital that this service continues in Wales. It's easy to donate a few bob now and then but I just feel it's important for me to put myself "on the line" to motivate my family and friends to perhaps dig a little deeper in support of this brilliant service.
