Story
On the 3rd February this year I was told I have malignant melanoma (skin cancer). The moment the dermatologist told Graham and I there was “ bad news” will stay with me for the rest of my life. We were ushered into the waiting room while we waited to hear when my appointment with the surgeon would be. The first thing I did was use my mobile phone to search ‘Macmillan’ and then ‘malignant melanoma’. Their website was factual, supportive and provided immediate advice to both of us. Later that day, as I emailed my family and close friends scattered all over the world, I included the link to the Macmillan web pages for further information. This meant I did not have to do all the explaining – Macmillan did it for me. As the weeks went by I became a frequent visitor to the Macmillan website. I was lucky. There was no metastasis. I am recovering well from surgery on my right upper leg and groin, which took place on 26th February. There is currently no sign of cancer in my body. Away from family and friends, in a country where English is not the first language, Macmillan provided me with easy-to-access support. They helped me stay positive.
At the same time I received the diagnosis I learnt I have a place in the Great North Run. When I put my name into the ballot I was at the fittest I had been in my life. Although I have been unable to maintain that level of fitness, I am determined to complete the Run. It will be my toughest running challenge yet. Please support me in this challenge. But moreover please support those who are not as lucky as me by supporting Macmillan.
I am thankful everyday for my life, Graham, Fiona
and Gavin and all that I have. And thank you for considering this request.
