Story

Arctic Challenge

It must have been a brainwashing ‘Paul McKenna’ moment.  I recall a vague voice…..  For your 50th you’re joining me and ‘your favourite 17 year old niece, Lois’ on the Luke’s Hospice fundraising challenge.  Images of trekking through tropical jungles… camel riding across the dessert… Amazon villages….I love the heat, maybe it would be a great adventure especially with Eileen and Lois – never a dull moment.

Then the -40 degree iceberg dropped…. surviving Arctic conditions 8 days of trekking…ice fishing! shelter snow hole building! hunting! The ability to adapt and live in this environment to satisfy your survival instinct!  What instinct? I’m unfit, out of shape and I definitely don’t do cold, I don’t do snow – never been on skis, white, white and more white.  I like stinky hot counties, colour, heat and spices!!!!  If that isn’t enough torture, part of this chilling challenge is to fundraise at least £3,000 for the St Luke’s Hospice.

I know, she said, that’s why you’re doing this challenge!!!!!!

Eileen, my sister has worked at St. Luke’s Hospice for over 15 years as Nurse/Nurse Manager, she along with her colleagues who provide specialist care for people with advanced life-threatening illness.  Their medical excellence, dedication and holistic approach towards patients, families, friends and carers and everyone involved in the hospice is what they do – and - is what St Luke’s Hospice is all about.

It relies very heavily on charity and fundraising events like this one to keep going.  So perhaps, the only sane thing about the whole mad challenge is the fantastic inspirational team at St Luke’s Hospice which makes it such a wonderful place and worthwhile cause.

If you can help me in any way to reach my  gigantic goal I would be really really grateful.

Thank you for your support,

Marie!
