Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Two years ago, when he was just 3 weeks old, our son Spencer stopped breathing and was taken to intensive care by the KIDS team (Kids Intensive Care and Decision Support). When a child has to be moved from one hospital to an intensive care unit they have to be taken by a specialist team who can intubate them (put them onto a life support machine). The KIDS team are part of Birmingham Children's Hospital and the only people able to do this in the West Midlands and Warwickshire. Unfortunatley, a month later he had to be taken by them again. The team were amazing and so reassuring during the most difficult time of our lives. Every child who travels in their ambulance receives a teddy and parents get a bar of chocolate and a drink. The teddy, chocolate and drink we were given in the ambulance may seem like a small thing but made such a difference to us at such a difficult and worrying time. Spencer's teddy helped hold his breathing tube in the right position in hospital and helped make the scary bed and machines he was hooked up to into a more 'normal' children's cot. In these emergency situations, parents are unlikely to have any home comforts with them. After over 24 hours sitting in a hospital with your child in a life threatening condition, the chocolate and drink are so important. You won't be thinking about your own needs but without some fuel, you won't be able to keep strong for your child. Over the months he was in hospital Spencer received some excellent care from countless NHS hospitals but the care he received from the KIDS team has stuck with us the most. All of the money we raise will go directly to the KIDS team. They utilise the money in many ways, funding the teddies and snack packs being one of them.
