Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I have just come back from a mammoth bike ride. 420 miles and over 33,000 feet of climb, according to my Garmin GPS device. That is as much as the height of Everest. And all in under 100 hours. There are less than 9100 people who have done this challenge since it started over 100 years ago!
As a trustee of the charity Myra's Wells, I understand the importance of clean water. The charity, which was started by my friend Eddie Martin, has recently completed the drilling of 87 wells and 3 water towers in villages in Burkina Faso. This is one of the world's poorest countries. millions of people there do not have reliable sources of clean water. In many cases, there is no access at all - they make do with dirty water from open wells and rivers.
Working in conjunction with local church pastors and head teachers, Myra's Wells has been providing help for 11 years. The guarantee is that all money received will go directly to wells projects. Nothing is taken out for any expenses. Trustees pay all other costs. Take a look at the web site www.myraswells.org.
I enjoy cycling - for which clean water is also a basis requirement. So I have undertaken another huge challenge and want to use it to draw attention to Myra's Wells and the need for water in Africa. The route is known as Raid Pyrenean. It is one of the hardest cycling challenges in Europe. Despite having to ask for a ride in a car for 35 miles on one very hot day, I am very happy to have all but completed the entire route. I didn't ask for contributions before the ride because I wasn't at all certain that I would make it to the end!
