We are fighting to make a world where diabetes does no harm

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Sunday September 12th, 2021, I will be doing the Great North Run for the fourth time in aid of Diabetes UK.

On December 1st, 1998 I was diagnosed as a
type 1 Diabetic (believe it was a Tuesday with an 8.30am GP appointment to be precise lol); that’s nearly 23 years on injections. As a charity close to my heart I thought I would raise much needed funds for this cause.

I am a keen runner which sees me compete in various distance up to half marathon and also a regular at Parkrun both running and volunteering. I run with Saltwell Harriers, that is close to my heart as my father was a member in the 80’s and 90’s. I have planned to do London Marathon in 2022 which I'm looking forward to.

Diabetes affects many people and I’m sure you know several people affected by this condition. I have never let it defeat me and I won’t start now. There are two types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes accounts for about 10 per cent of all adults with diabetes and is treated by daily insulin doses – taken either by injections or via an insulin pump. This usually develops before the age of 40, mainly young people – at present there is no cure (the injections aren’t that bad! ha).

Type 2 diabetes usually appears in people over the age of 40, it often appears from the age of 25. It is also increasingly becoming more common in children, adolescents and young people of all ethnicities. Type 2 diabetes accounts for between 85 and 95 per cent of all people with diabetes and is treated with a healthy diet and increased physical activity.

Clearly fundraising is crucial in funding research into a cure for this condition and to help Diabetes UK with support they offer people affected by diabetes.

I appreciate the last 12 months have been tough for us all so please don’t feel pressured into giving but would appreciate greatly any donations you can spare – big or small - and please remember to add the gift aid to any donation at no cost to you.

Thank you for your time and most importantly keep smiling 😊
