Story
Daniels' Story.
In January 2010 my 6 year old son Daniel became seriously ill with what transpired to be the very rare condition of toxic shock syndrome.
He was transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital High Dependency Unit due to the onset of multiple organ failure and septicaemia. His health further declined after his lungs spontaneously collapsed and he was immediately transferred to intensive care where he spent nearly a week on life support.
Through the skills, expertise, dedication (and a lot of faith) of the ICU staff he eventually improved, going back through high dependency and eventually to a ward.
Without the action of everyone at the Children's hospital i hate to think what could have been!
In February 2011 i treked the Moroccan Sahara scaling the highest sand dunes on the planet. With the help of family, friends, work colleagues and several events we raised an amazing £5500+ for the hospital.
In November 2012 I cycled from Vietnam to Cambodia raising a further £4500 pounds for the hospital.
My aim this year is to raise a further £5000 taking my total to over £15,000 raised for the hospital. This money is spent on essential medical research, treatment and also making the environment a more pleasant one for children, such as by decor, provision of games and enrichment from children’s entertainment. All of this is crucial to the treatment and rehabilitation of the often very poorly children who have to attend hospital during often very confusing, scary and traumatic times in their lives
It seems like people enjoy seeing me go through pain and uncomfortable living conditions so this year i have elected to cycle Coast to Coast across Costa Rica.
The trek takes place in April and over 7 days of cycling will cover approximately 500 kilometres, from The Pacific Ocean across the jungle and volcano zones of mid Costa Rica concluding in the Carribbean Sea.
The route is very varied and involves jungle, mountains, remote villages, living in tents in remote an inhospitable locationsr.
One of the biggest challenges will be the weather, which will be incredibly hot, very humid at all times and subject to torrential downpours with literally no notice.
For those that take pleasure in watching me go through pain i can assure you that this will not be an easy trek !!
Any monies donated will be divided equally between the intensive care unit, high dependency unit and the renal ward that Daniel stayed on.
