UNIGLOBE Mount Kilimanjaro Charity Climb 6th-16th Sept 2010 · 6 September 2010
Hi
Well I decided to get off my ever increasing backside and climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Sept of this year. Having been in the Outdoor trade for many many years I thought it was about time I dragged myself away from my computer screen and finally test out some of the gear!! Of course this is not a stroll in the park and the fitness regieme has started in earnest....much to the annoyance of my knees!!
I know that times are tough at the moment, but if everyone that visits this page just donates £1, I will be £1 closer to reaching my target and making life better for the girls of Mwanza, Tanzania
The charity we have chosen to support is called Plan International www.plan‐international.org and the project we are raising money for is focused on a girls’ Secondary School residence in Mwanza, Tanzania, under Plan’s key campaign called ‘Because I am a Girl’. Fuller details of the campaign can be found on their website , but in brief, the campaign recognises the important role girls play in helping communities around the world break the cycle of poverty. Education is a key element; in fact an extra year of primary school boosts girls’ wages by 10 to 20 percent, benefitting their communities, their families and eventually their children.
Plan enables poor communities to take action together to achieve children’s rights to an education, decent healthcare, clean drinking water and more. They give long‐term practical support, so poor communities can improve the lives of their children and themselves. They also campaign to change the way a whole range of adults ‐ from parents to politicians ‐ think and act, because we know their decisions can perpetuate poverty.
Specifically the project will:
Construct a residence to provide girls with a safe and supportive home, so that they can go to school, develop personally and succeed
Equip the bedroom and kitchen with all necessary furniture and supplies, so it feels like home
Ensure that girls have access to clean water and proper toilets to sustain life and prevent disease
Educate the community about the advantages an education can provide for all children and girls in particular
The project will directly benefit 100 girls, however thousands more will benefit from the new residence in years to come. Parents, teachers and community members will also gain through child protection, gender sensitivity and child rights training.
For more information about the campaign please visit www.becauseiamagirl.org
Remember that 100% of the funds raised will go to the project in Tanzania!
Many thanks for taking some time to read my page and please if you could make a small donation that would be great!!
Cheers
Matt
