Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I've been competing in triathlons for the past couple of years and last year decided to take the step up to an Ironman by entering Ironman Austria which takes place on July 1st 2012. For those of you who don't know what an Ironman is, it consists of a 3.8km (2.4 miles) swim, 180km (112 miles) cycle and a marathon run (42.2km/26.2 miles), raced in that order and without a break. I have been training for the event for up to, and sometimes over, 20 hours a week since last October.
Soon after I started training I heard that an old university friend, Peter Brooke, had been diagnosed with leukaemia and sadly he died in February. This came as a huge shock as Pete was one of the most vibrant, inspiring and resilient people I had ever met.
Pete was a loving husband to Britt and father to Oz and Remy and those of you who knew him at Roehampton will remember that he was the linchpin of the Whitelands Bar, without Pete the bar just wouldn't have worked. You might also remember the stream of good-natured abuse which he doled out from behind the bar and that he was a friend to all who came in.
Although a match was never found for Pete’s bone marrow, it was his fervent wish that people should sign up for the British Bone Marrow Registry. Please do check out their websitehttp://www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/bonemarrow/. It would be such a great tribute to him if everyone reading this signed up, so please do this if you can.
I felt helpless to do anything about Pete's condition until Ironman Austria presented the perfect opportunity to raise some much needed money for one of the charities that took care of him so excellently throughout his illness. Britt, Oz and Remy would be so grateful if you would show your support by sponsoring me to raise money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
