Matt's: The Great Beard Shave Off · 1 January 2019

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.

I started growing my beard Halloween of 2017. I don't know why, I just did. There were countless times when I thought about shaving it off, countless times people told me to. But I fought on, spured on by how it made me feel. It demanded respect, it demanded fist bumps off complete strangers, it became the beard people spoke about, I was the beard and the beard was me.

But all great things, like my beard, must come to an end. And not just any end, of tears behind closed doors all alone, but for a great cause, something to be proud of as the beard stands for. For charity.

I chose Alzheimer's Society as my charity to fundraise for as recently both my Grandparents died who suffered from Dementia. It was a difficult time and especially difficult for my father. I want to do what I can to help others, and I hope you will join me on this journey.

This will not be easy and I will need your full support, donate anything you can.

I will be shaving my beard off at an employee family fun day being held by my employer Filtermist International Ltd on Saturday 22nd June 2019. The event will take place at the company's Telford site to celebrate Filtermist's 50th anniversary.
