Last year, four teams of Mayville triathletes, plus eight pupils and a parent braved the waters of the Solent, got on their bikes and put on their running shoes to take part in the Portsmouth Sprint Triathlon, and The Portsmouth Short Swim Sprint Triathlon. Father and son Martin and Travis Kemp took part together. Fifteen year old Travis who’s in Yr10 said, “It was the first one that I had done. The swimming was the hardest, and really we had too much neoprene on wetsuits ,balaclavas, gloves and boots so it was hard to swim. It was good my dad did it with me and it was great when we got to the end.” Head of P.E. Doug Elvy who came in 122nd in the Sprint Triathlon says, “ I thought it was an excellent experience made bearable by all the support from those competing for Mayville and on the sidelines. It gave the pupils who took part a goal and a challenge to train towards and a real chance to bond with one another.” Mayville's team t-shirts were everywhere as the whole team pulled together to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Mayville’s four teams came in 144th,146th,150th and 153rd. Spanish teacher Cintya Martinez galvanised Mayville to take part in the City event. It was a great morning despite the early start, (7.20am register and in the sea by 8.00am!) All the money raised on the day goes to Macmillan Cancer Support. Martin and Travis Kemp have raised more than £450 for charity and Mayville’s total stood at more than £1000.
