London Marathon 2021 · 3 October 2021 ·

Nearly half of all refugees are children and more than ever before are unaccompanied, often embarking on long and dangerous journeys to find a safe place to call home. We help child refugees access their right to reach safety, then support their first steps to rebuilding their lives.

Story

Hello!

I’m going to run my first marathon on 3rd October 2021. I’ll be proudly running for the awesome charity Safe Passage, raising vital funds for child refugees.

I’ve never run a marathon before. This is my first. Likely my last! The distance daunts me. BUT... I’m so proud to be running the iconic London Marathon for Safe Passage. I’d appreciate your support for the big day, or the training I’ll have to do. Or both!

I want to run a marathon for a cause close to my heart. Since having my own children, I have been particularly moved by the ordeals faced by refugees, especially children. No child should have to flee persecution, but to be forced to live in squalor or to travel in dangerous circumstances is unacceptable. Children have rights and I am keen to support Safe Passage in fundraising to fight and campaign to uphold these.

If you can, please do sponsor me. I’d be really grateful and your support will have a huge impact on the lives of refugee children and their families. Children like Daniel...

After fleeing Eritrea in 2015, Daniel boarded an overcrowded boat from Libya in the hope of reaching Italy. The boat sank in the Mediterranean with 1500 people on board and Daniel was one of just 27 survivors. He eventually made it on to France, and then the UK. Shortly after Daniel left Eritrea, his 15-year-old brother Alex attempted the same treacherous journey but could get no further than France. He wanted to be reunited with his brother but the Home Office refused. When Safe Passage first met Alex in 2017, he was homeless, vulnerable and without hope. We organised a space in a shelter and won an appeal so that Alex was reunited with Daniel in the summer of 2018. The brothers now live in Leeds, where we continue to support them. Finally safe with his brother, Alex is learning English and hopes to continue his studies at university.

Without support like yours, Daniel could still be sleeping rough in Calais and the brothers might never have seen each other again.
