Hi and welcome to our page!
On 23rd of April, we raced against the wind, chocolate egg on a spoon; rollerblading along the Serpentine Road. We took part in a crazy chocolate race to raise some funds for GOAL, a humanitarian charity that that supports some of the poorest of the poor. We`d like to thank you all for your generous support, it means a lot to us and to GOAL. Please, see the thank you note from Tamara, the manager of GOAL UK office below.
On behalf of everyone at GOAL, I want to express my sincere thanks all who generously donated to Michaela’s and Toms Chocolate Skate for GOAL. In total and incredible £372 was raised, and counting! This will help us deliver vital aid to some of the most vulnerable people in the developing world.
During 2010, GOAL responded to major crises in Pakistan, Haiti and Niger. In the immediate aftermath of post-monsoon flooding in Pakistan, we were able to provide life-saving support, distribute water and food, and help with emergency evacuations. We continue our work there today, some of which includes therunning of therapeutic feeding programmes in camps for internally displaced people, and providing food and medical treatment to malnourished children and pregnant and lactating women. Screening for malnutrition takes place weekly in each camp.
After delivering food to almost half a million people following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, GOAL agreed an $11m contract with the US government. We are now building 2,000 transitional shelters and several hundred latrines and wash blocks. Following an outbreak of cholera in Port-au-Prince, we are striving to mitigate and control the disease in the 38 camps under our care, by ensuring that people have access to clean water and sanitation facilities.
We also responded to a life-threatening crisis in Niger, where millions of people were faced with severe food shortages. We expanded emergency interventions, and began implementing specialised feeding programmes for severely malnourished children.
As well as in Pakistan, Haiti and Niger, our work continues apace in nine other countries in the developing world. Two examples of what we are doing are outlined below:
Without your generous support, such work on behalf of the poorest of the poor would not be possible.
A special thank you Michaela and Tom for organising such a wonderful event!
Thank you,
Tamara Gervasoni
